I did a post last year about how working at Microsoft as a V- or A- was like being black in the south during the 1950’s. Obviously, I don’t believe that statement to be true, but the post was intended to be sarcastic commentary in the way that blue badges tend to treat orange badges, intentional or not. Since that post, I’ve had a few contractors get somewhat offended at the post.
So I’ve decided to back it up with stories of life at Microsoft as a V- or A-. If you have one you’d like to share good or bad, feel free to leave it as a comment.
This story was told to me by a co-worker. He is now an FTE, but this story takes places during his time as a contracted (CSG) employee.
He worked on a team that had a couple of contractors, and there was an employee event within his organization. Wanting to make sure that everyone was included his manager invited him and the other contractor to the event. When they showed up at the event, there were a couple of people at the entrance, who were checking to make sure people coming worked for the company.
FTE/bouncer – (seeing the orange badge) sorry this event is for FTE’s only
CSG’s – Well, “manager” invited us.
FTE/bouncer – No, sorry, if they told you that they were wrong.
CSG’s – (not wanted to make a deal out of it) Okay, no problem.
As they were walking away, they heard the Admin/bouncer say to one of the other people standing there, “Dash trash.” For those who don’t know, this is a generic insult used at Microsoft when referring to contractors.
The only saving grace in this story is as they were walking away, the manager who invited them, walked up as asked why they were leaving. Upon finding out what happened, the manager went up to the FTE/bouncer’s informing them of who she was, who her husband was (who happened to be even higher up in the company) and asked those FTE’s who their manager was.
I can assume that there was some follow up with the FTE/bouncers manager. And the CSG’s in question did get to participate in the event.
