Republican Senator Wants to Repeal Child Labor Laws in Missouri

Jane Cunningham In the latest attempt by a Republican to rollback individual rights and government protections, Missouri state senator Jane Cunningham is proposing to effectively eliminate child labor laws.

The Republican from St. Louis County has proposed SB 222 which, "eliminates the prohibition on employment of children under age fourteen. Restrictions on the number of hours and restrictions on when a child may work during the day are also removed." It also, "removes the authority of the director of the Division of Labor Standards to inspect employers who employ children and to require them to keep certain records for children they employ." in essence, a child under the age of 14 could work for a company, and that company could do whatever it wants to that child, and there would be no safeguards in place to protect the child.

For those who don't know (Tea-baggers), at one point in this country, we didn't have child labor laws. The result was, we had children working in factories and sweat shops. Similar to some of the countries we currently buy or clothing from. But, a few progressive thinking people, realized that child labor is a bad thing. And that children should be in school, and having fun, not working 10 hour days.
